Public consultations on changes in the method of developing Stock Exchange Indices

PRESS RELEASE

GPW Benchmark informs about:

  • commencement of public consultations on changes in the method of developing Stock Exchange Indices;
  • change in provisions concerning the number of companies on the reserve lists of WIG20, mWIG40, sWIG80 and WIG30 indices;
  • provisions limiting the shares of the largest companies in the indices;
  • change in the rules for concluding and publishing information on cross transactions by GPW after the implementation of the new WATS transaction system.

GPW Benchmark invites capital market participants to familiarize with the Consultation Document and to participate in public consultations on of proposed methodology changes of provision some indices from GPW Indices Family.

The statistical tests performed showed that, in accordance with the classification adopted by the Administrator, the changes proposed in the Consultation Document do not require public consultations as they do not meet the criteria for a material change in the method, but it is considered reasonable to conduct such consultation in order to maintain the transparency of the process:

  • In the provision limiting the list of companies eligible for inclusion in the WIG20 reserve list to the first 40 companies with the largest capitalization (Section 5.1.20 of the Rules of the GPW Indices Family) to expand the list to a larger number of companies with the possibility of inclusion in the aforementioned list.
  • To amend the provisions on the number of companies on the reserve lists of the respective indices, so that the reserve lists correspond to the % of shares in the portfolios of the respective indices WIG20, mWIG40, sWIG80 and WIG30. It was proposed that the number of companies on the reserve list of each index should be a percentage of the number of companies in its portfolio.

The consultation document published by GPW Benchmark contains an analysis and a detailed description of the proposed changes, which were defined on the basis of the analytical work carried out. The consultation document together with the questionnaire are available on the Administrator's website www.gpwbenchmark.pl. The consultations will last until May 13, 2025.

At the same time, in order to ensure the legibility of the measures, the Administrator informs that the following changes in the method of compiling the GPW Indices are planned for implementation and are not subject to the public consultation procedure:

1. introduction of provisions in the Rules assuming that the limitation of the shares of the largest companies applies not only to periodic adjustments, but also to extraordinary adjustments, such as after a company's fast track debut,

2. clarification of the provisions in the Rules of the GPW Indices Family that refer to the market value of companies, so as to avoid possible doubts of interpretation where the total capitalization (resulting from the number of issued and registered shares) is used, and where the capitalization of companies on the basis of free float shares is used, especially with regard to foreign dual listed companies

3. to present, as part of the public consultation, information regarding the Administrator's conduct in connection with the change in the rules for entering into and publishing information on cross transactions by the Warsaw Stock Exchange (GPW) after the implementation of the new WATS trading system.

Public consultations of the proposed changes will last until May 13, 2025.
